Focusing on the thriving ties between marine ecosystems and built environment a partnership program funded by EEA Grants Portugal through the Bilateral Relations Fund has come to a promising conclusion last March. Under the auspices of Garagem Sul / Centro Cultural de Belém, the program brought together a research team from Universidade do Minho’s School of Architecture, being part of Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT), and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. The objective was working on the understanding of how port cities and territories have changed according to fishing practices, technological processing procedures, and the human impact in marine ecosystems.

Lectures were held by André Tavares and Diego Inglez de Souza in Oslo, as well by Karl Otto Ellefson in Guimarães, while a debate took place online within the framework of the exhibition Our Land Is the Sea. A tangible result of the conversation was published in the booklet Notes on Codfish Architecture.

The AHO Coastal Mapping Research Studio visited Portugal in November 2021, while the Fishing Architecture research team visited the Lofoten and Vesterålen islands in Norway in March 2022. The visits were the occasion to foster further collaborations on the common topics for both research teams.
