Fish-A is launching an open-ended selection procedure to recruit two marine biologists, ecological modellers and/or fisheries scientists

The interdisciplinary research project Fishing Architecture (FISH-A), European Research Council Consolidator Grant reference ERC-2021-COG 101044244 (2022–2027), funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, based at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) in Portugal, is launching an open-ended selection procedure to recruit two members for its research team. The call will remain open until 30 September 2024.

FISH-A is a research project that sets out to trace a socioecological history of North Atlantic architecture in relation to fisheries, elucidating the relationships between marine environments and terrestrial landscapes and assessing the ecological impact of fishing constructions and the natural resources they depend upon.

We are looking for expressions of interest from researchers in biology, oceanography, ecological modelling, fisheries sciences, fishing history, and related fields who are willing to mix theory and practice in a critical and imaginative way. The successful candidates will be based in Porto for a period of two years: to ensure the effective delivery of the research project, they will work there alongside other members of the research team, in which they will play a valuable role. They will work in the research project’s collaborative environment, attend regular team meetings for the duration of their contracts, and contribute to the project outputs. Depending on their profiles, they will also be expected to prepare papers for presentation at national and international conferences, take part in teaching activities related to these topics, organize workshops and fieldwork campaigns, and submit their work for peer-reviewed publication. Although the research will be conducted in English, knowledge of other languages is welcomed.

Two specific profiles are sought after in this call:
1. Ecological modelling and/or oceanography;
2. Ichthyology and/or fisheries sciences.

The expected salaries will correspond to Initial Level Doctorate (approximately € 2.294,95 fourteen months per year, taxes to be deducted and supplements to be added). For experienced applicants or candidates without PhD the salary will be negotiated commensurate with the researcher profile.

1. Admission requirements:

— National, foreign, and stateless candidates may apply if they hold a doctoral degree and/or have a scientific and professional curriculum that demonstrates a profile in keeping with the activities to be undertaken.

— The admission requirements for this call are as follows:

a) Holder of a doctoral degree in marine biology, oceanography, ichthyology and fisheries sciences, or related field (we welcome non-PhD applicants that prove having relevant experience in the area)

b) Proficiency in spoken and written English and in at least one other language

2. The applications must be accompanied by the following documents in PDF format:

a) Certificate proving that the candidate holds an academic degree

b) Motivation letter (maximum 3 pages), containing: i) reflection on activities relevant to this call; ii) reflection on the candidate’s suitability for the research activities envisaged in the scope of the project

c) Curriculum vitae (maximum 10 pages)

d) Selection of published articles or original written and visual documents considered to be most representative of the candidate’s research and academic work

e) Other documents considered relevant for the assessment of individual merit.

Expressions of interest should be sent to Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo at fish@arq.up.pt with the subject line “FISH-A expression of interest _ name of applicant”.

If you have any questions about these vacancies and the desired profiles, please email the Principal Investigator of the project, André Tavares, at atavares@arq.up.pt
